A man who was exonerated after spending more than four years in prison for selling counterfeit New York Rangers hockey tickets outside Madison Square Garden is suing New York City.

Brian Johnson was convicted on four felony counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument in October 2015 but was cleared on appeal because the court found no proof he knew the tickets were counterfeit.

The city, the New York Police Department and unnamed police officers “acted with malice and malicious intent in their investigation, arrest, prosecution, indictment,” and charging of Johnson, the complaint alleges.
